I'm Sergeant First Class, J. D. Lankford. U.S. Army, Retired. 87 years old, an EX Prisoner of War, WW II. I am the author of the book,"WALK WITH ME". It is about me growing up during the great depression "1930"s serving in President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Tree Army, better known as the Civilian Conservation Corp, (CCC) from 1939 to 1942, the CCC was under the control of the military, there were over three million of us young men in the Corps our pay was ONE DOLLAR A DAY, ($30.00 A MONTH) $25.00 of that went home to help feed the family, we had $5.00 a month for our personal use. when the Corps close operation,in 1942, I started working in the officers exchange club, Fort Benning Ga. remained there until I went into the U.S. Army, I took basic training at Camp Walters Texas, from there back to Fort Benning for Para-troop training. It didn't take very long for me to realize jumping out of a Air Plane wasn't my thing.
The Army was putting together the 106th Inf Division at Fort Jackson South Carolina and I was assigned to company B 423 Reg of the 106th Division, after completing our training here in the States the Division was shipped overseas . Ten days later we were in battle, one of the bloodiest battle of the war THE "BATTLE OF THE BULGE" If you want to know how wars are fought, walk with me in battle, if you want to know how it is being a prisoner of war, having every right you ever had stripped from you having to live worse than an animal trying to survive on ONE LOAF of black bread mixed with sawdust four inches wide, five inches high and eight inches long, divided between twelve men for one days ration I weighed 188 pounds when captured as a POW, when liberated 188 days later My weight was 93 pounds. Had we "POW's" not eaten grass, weeds roots, bark off trees, bugs and anything else we thought had any nourishment in it, no way could we have survived, only by the grace of God we made it. if you want to see how prisoner are treated, "walk with me in prison". Walk with me in battle, after battle, and see just what a price was paid for this freedom we have, I can assure you of one thing! You will know that Freedom don't come free someone had to pay and we paid dearly. I was given four Bronze Battles Stare for what I did in battle.
You will find most all your questions in the book "Walk With Me" The book can be read from the pulpit of you church or Sunday School Class, there is no fiction in it, not only did I write ever word if it , I lived it.

Walk With Me eBook JD Lankford Reviews
I love this book! I'ts great for kids to read.Trust me i absoulutly LOVE this book! I would recommend this to anyone!
I encountered this 80+ year old man who apparently sees fit to traipse around a base dressed in his Class A uniform. I walked by his exhibit, where he was selling books about his "combat service" during WW2 and Korea. I noticed he had a fair set of Medals that seemed to be squared away, but at the same time I noticed a few problems...
First of All he was sporting a Combat Infantry Man Badge w/ 1 Star (meaning second award), 1 Bronze Star Medal, and so forth. thats all that got my attention from the get go.
but like my father always told me "if something looks to good to be true it probably is.
I asked him 1 specific question, "where is your blue discs under your crossed rifle?" he had pointed to his CIB, trying to divert the question I had asked, I said "no that is a CIB, I'm talking about under your crossed rifles... why is there no blue discs under them, Enlisted Infantrymen have done that since World War 2"...
his response was "Son, do you know what this is, this is the bronze star medal do you know how many men I had to kill to get this?" I cut him off right away and said "I know what a Bronze Star Medal is, my father has one and a CIB as well so i'm well aware of the criteria to receive that award.
I asked him "when and where did you get your 1st Award of the CIB?" his response was "in december of 1944 during the Battle of the bulge"... my first response was "no you didn't"
he got pretty pissed
then I asked him "how is this possible considering you were in a POW camp?" Last I checked they don't give awards or promotions in a stalag.
so I shot down his 1st claim of having a CIB. asked him about his 2nd award, he just said "Korea"....
Asked him where his "2nd CIB was awarded at"? his response was "Korea", I fired back with "no you didn't"....
I then purchased a book, signed by him... i'm just curious,
how did you get the Pacific Campaign Medal when you were supposedly a POW at the time?
and why is it that with your Bronze Star Medal (9th award) has no V device attached to it, considering you claim all 9 of them were awarded for valor, you figure they would get it right after the 8th time, and why does Colonel David Hackworth hold the record with 8.... trying to 1 up him there JD?
Also why is it you don't wear 1 SOLC, and 3 BOLC on your BSM????
oh and a piece of advice if you want to buy a fictional book that relates with the military than this book is for you...
its full of so much malarkey I think that just the book should be used against him...
who the hell serves in WWII, and then Korea.... just to "retire" as an E-7
He is listed as a POW... The name is at least, at the very best he has embellished about a lot of things,
Thank you, Mr. Lankford, for giving us a real life depiction of "man's inhumanity to man" in times of war. I'll never take our freedom for granted. Thank you for your tremendous sacrifice for that freedom. May the rest of your days be filled with blessings.
The book started with the life of the writer living and working on a farm in the South. I can relate since I grew up about that same time and worked on a farm the same as the writer. He gives his experiences in the military along with his research of the larger picture. The book is good reading for someone interested in farming during that time period and the writers experiences during World War II.
