Her main suspect is the new Australian ambassador, Timothy Fardel, but the dark side of his personality is not the hidden truth Maya expected. Neither are the emotions that get in the way. Hydromancist Seven Forbidden Arts Book 4 edition by Charmaine Pauls Literature Fiction eBooks

Wow hot and sexy all rolled into one along with the paranormal heck yeah that makes for a damn good book.
So I started this book and I hit my first sex scene pretty early on and I started thinking to myself oh no please don't let this whole thing be rushed because that would ruin it. I even thought to myself I should drop a star because of it. I can honestly say I thought it turned out to be a pretty darn good book after all especially when we learn the secret that Tim has. That is when I understood the whole sex scene and the attraction.
I don't think I have read a book that dealt with the paranormal like this. Maya has a power that deals with water which is a pretty neat power to have, so you just know she is going to have to use her power at least once in the story though I was hoping for a bit more.
Her mission is to stop the weapons that are being smuggled from Mexico to Africa but she is not suppose to fall in love with one of the people responsible.
We see pretty much an instant attraction between Maya and Tim and you just hope by the end of the story all secrets are laid out from each of them and that they fall in love. You can literally feel the heat coming from both characters.
Maya is a very strong character and a kick butt heroine, Tim is the hot and sexy male who has a secret of his own.
There are a couple of twists within this book and all I can say is read it. I know this is book four in this series but it was great as a stand alone. I do think I will be reading the other books in this series just to see what other paranormal's are out there like Maya.

Hydromancist Seven Forbidden Arts Book 4 edition by Charmaine Pauls Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is the fourth book in the Seven Forbidden Arts series that can be read as a stand-alone.

There are individuals in the world with abilities that are forbidden, control of the elements can be a powerful weapon in the wrong hands. Maya Martin is a member of a paranormal task force whose mission is to seek out such individuals and those that would use them for evil purposes. Having been born with one of the seven forbidden abilities makes Maya highly qualified to assist her team, she’s a hydromancist and can manipulate water. She swore an oath to only use her abilities for good, an oath she has reasons to take seriously for she is seeking absolution from her past mistakes.

Alone on a mission in Costa Rica as her teammates are dealing with personal issues Maya’s only contact with the team is via technological devices. Her cover is that of a dive instructor, the perfect facade for someone with her unique abilities. Her target is the Australian Ambassador who’s suspected of weapons smuggling. Maya didn’t expect the man to be charming and sexy or that she would be so magnetically drawn to him. It doesn’t take her long to realize that he’s a contradiction and has many secrets she needs to learn. There’s a mystery to the man more than illegal activities would lead you to believe.

As the Australian Ambassador to Costa Rica Timothy Fardel is always involved in negotiations to promote his country. At one such meeting he espies the beautiful cocoa skinned Maya seated within listening distance. Her observant skills and her sass intrigue him. He’s unaware her presence was by design and he follows the trail of crumbs she leaves. Being afraid of water doesn’t stop him from taking diving classes, he’s the kind of man to face his fears, spending time with Maya is all the reason he needs to override the trepidation the sea causes. When he wants something nothing stands in his way.

There’s so much more to the character of Maya than what we’d seen previously, the cold emotionless kick-ass woman has many hidden layers. As the result of a rough childhood in South Africa she fights her own emotions for emotions get people killed especially those you care for. She’s a woman haunted by the ghost of her first lover whose spirit seems to walk life with her. I loved how Maya honestly reached out to her commander for advice when she finds herself wavering about carrying out her mission, she’s torn between what’s good about her target and what he supposedly does.

Tim is an alpha anti-hero with his own dark agenda, an agenda that Maya doesn’t know of for it’s much deeper than what she suspects, his secrets are many. He’s decided that Maya is “the one” for him and won’t let her go even though the timing of finding her is precarious. He’ll protect her whether she wants him to or not and she’s not used to giving up control. His good deeds mystify the heroine for how can he be part of a profession that causes so many deaths yet have compassion for those in need and obtained the unwavering loyalty of the two men who are his bodyguards.

What a unique captivating story this was, heavy with the theme of redemption and vengeance, much action and suspense, many secrets, a complex plot with numerous twists, and serious emotional trials and character growth. Maya had been my least favorite character because we didn’t really know her, her history was heartbreaking as was Tim’s. Nothing is just black and white in life, there are shades of gray and the promises, the oaths, we make no matter how much we believe in them can sometimes be difficult to honor, it’s the battle over them that makes for a good tale. There were more paranormals than we’d seen before and I suspected what turned out to be the case though not exactly as expected. It’s great when an author surprises me. The romance was very sexy yet sweet with wonderful banter, undeniable chemistry along with personalities that sometimes clashed to keep things interesting. The protagonists complement each other well, they make a great bad-ass, kick-ass couple.

This is the fourth book in the Seven Forbidden Arts Series. I loved it!

Maya Martin is a wonderful character. I really liked her. She is an extremely tough character; she's had to be. Growing up on the Cape Flats, a notoriously dangerous area of Cape Town, she's had to face vicious gangs and survived. Now older and working with the paranormal taskforce with her gift of hydromancy, she's on a dangerous undercover mission to destroy an arms dealing syndicate. Maya faces a battle between her heart and her head when her attraction for Timothy Fardel brings even more trouble.

Timothy Fardel is a bit of a dark horse. I really liked him. I know it sounds weird to say that considering his involvement with arms dealing. However, as I got to know him better and his secrets were revealed, I found myself liking him even more.

Having enjoyed the other three books in the series, I was eagerly looking forward to reading this one. I started reading and didn't put it down until I had finished it. The story is told through both Tim's and Maya's point of view. I would have liked to have had a little bit more from Tim's side of things. However, as the story unfolded, I could understand why the author decided not to take that path; it left Tim to be more mysterious.

It was nice to meet all the other members of the paranormal taskforce again. However, they were mostly on the peripheral edges, rather in the thick of it. It was interesting to meet Tim's bodyguards. They take their duty very seriously and are extremely loyal to Tim. I must admit that I didn't take to his secretary, Frida Adolfsson. She is very bitchy towards Maya, which I can understand, as she is also protective of Tim and doesn't want to see him hurt. However, I still found her cold at times.

There are several twists and turns that surprised me. Though none more so than when Tim's secret is revealed. I won't say what it is, as that would be a spoiler. The chemistry between Maya and Tim is extremely hot and the bedroom scenes are scorching! I reached the end of the story and it left me looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Charmaine Pauls has written an entertaining standalone erotic romance. Her characters are lifelike and come alive on the page. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow is wonderful. I would definitely consider reading more of her books in the future.

Due to the explicit nature of some of the scenes, as well as use of foul language, I do not recommend this book to readers under the age of 18. I do, however, recommend this book if you love science fiction, erotica, erotic romance or paranormal romance genres. – Lynn Worton
Sexy, well-written, with a unique hero & heroine. Loved it!
There were a lot of twist & turns that I didn't expect or see coming & I love when that happens. I will most assuredly be getting the other books in this series to read.
